Korean Texan – Disagreeing, Disconnecting, Dissecting the Balance

Episode 15 - September 3rd, 2020

We all balance differently.

Even within one family, each person can prioritize the values of their cultures

to different degrees…

in opposite directions.

Unfortunately, disagreements about how we balance cultures can lead to disconnection.

One day in Korea David Song’s parents said, we’re moving to Texas.

A new life for the family, a new career for dad, a new chance at education for the kids…

But teenage David faced culture shock and loneliness.

Luckily, a trusted teacher, some helpful students,

and a caring girl came into his life at this critical time.

Unfortunately, David’s balancing of cultures led to disagreements and disconnection

with not only his parents but the Korean community.

And now, as David tells his story in retrospect,

we try to dissect the balance on both sides.
